Biography

Dr. med. Bruno Capelli is a specialist in Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Sports & Exercise Medicine, recognised by the FMH, the Swiss Medical Association. He currently serves as Head of Cardiac Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine at the Istituto Cardiocentro Ticino in Lugano, positions he has held since 2019 and 2015 respectively.

Previously, from 2007 to 2015, he was Senior Physician in the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care of the Fondazione Cardiocentro Ticino, Lugano. His career began as a resident physician in both Internal Medicine and Surgery at the Bellinzona and Valli Regional Hospital, between 1999 and 2005.

In 1998 he obtained his degree in Medicine and Surgery (Internal Medicine), followed in 2008 by the specialisation in Emergency Medicine (SGNOR) and, in 2009, by the training in Sports Medicine at SEMS – Sports & Exercise Medicine Switzerland.

1998

Degree in Medicine and Surgery

Completion of university studies with a solid clinical foundation, at a recognised academic institution.

1999 – 2003

Resident Physician in Internal Medicine – Bellinzona Regional Hospital

Core clinical experience in hospital internal medicine, with rotations in acute wards and outpatient activity. Acquisition of cross-disciplinary skills in the management of chronic and complex patients.

2004

Resident Physician in Surgery – Bellinzona Regional Hospital

Clinical and surgical activity on the ward and in the operating theatre, including the management of surgical emergencies and post-operative care.

2005 – 2007

Resident Physician in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care – Fondazione Cardiocentro Ticino

Training in cardiac-surgery anaesthesia and resuscitation, with particular attention to invasive ventilation, pharmacological support and intensive monitoring.

2008

Training in Emergency Medicine (SGNOR)

In-depth training in the management of hospital and pre-hospital emergencies according to the standards of the Swiss Society of Emergency Medicine.

2009

Training in Sports Medicine

A training path focused on the clinical and functional assessment of the athlete, cardiovascular prevention and exercise prescription.

2007 – 2015

Senior Physician, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care – Fondazione Cardiocentro Ticino

Clinical responsibility in the cardiac-surgery operating theatre and in intensive care. Coordination of the medical team and implementation of advanced anaesthesiology protocols.

2015 – 2024

Head of Sports Medicine – Istituto Cardiocentro Ticino

Direction of the service specialising in the cardiological assessment of athletes, preventive screening, stress testing and fitness-to-play evaluations, including in patients with heart disease.

2019 – 2024

Head of Cardiac Rehabilitation – Istituto Cardiocentro Ticino

Supervision of rehabilitation programmes for patients after a cardiovascular event. Multidisciplinary coordination for functional recovery and secondary prevention.
