Biography
Prof. Dr. Tiziano Moccetti is a renowned Swiss cardiologist, a pioneer in interventional cardiology and cardiac surgery. Founder of the Cardiocentro Ticino, he made a decisive contribution to the development of cardiovascular medicine in Switzerland. He was among the first to adopt innovative techniques of myocardial revascularisation and minimally invasive surgery. Internationally recognised, he has received numerous prizes and honours for his clinical and scientific career. He continues to offer specialist consultations, combining experience, innovation and humanity.
Professional career
He began his academic career with medical studies at the Universities of Zurich and Paris, acquiring a solid clinical and scientific grounding in two major European university centres. This period marked the beginning of his commitment to medical excellence, built on international and multidisciplinary knowledge.
He carried out research at the Institute of Pathology of the University of Zurich, where he also completed his doctoral thesis. This experience sharpened his scientific rigour and his expertise in clinical and pathological analysis.
He obtained the FMH title of specialist in Internal Medicine, an official recognition conferred by the Swiss Medical Association attesting to solid clinical experience and a high level of competence in the management of complex disease.
He passed the international ECFMG examination in the United States and was appointed lecturer at the University of Zurich, thus beginning an academic career parallel to his clinical activity.
He obtained the FMH specialisation in Cardiology, completing his training in internal and cardiovascular medicine.
He served as Head of the Department of Internal Medicine and Cardiology at the Ospedale Civico in Lugano. In this role he developed innovative clinical services, introduced new diagnostic and therapeutic methods, and trained generations of young Ticinese physicians.
He obtained the “Venia Legendi” from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Zurich, granting him the right to teach Internal Medicine and Cardiology and officially marking the beginning of his senior academic career.
For twenty years he was Medical Director of the Ospedale Civico in Lugano, overseeing clinical organisation, internal medical training and the adoption of new technologies in the hospital.
He is Professor at the University of Zurich and has also taught at the University of Insubria (since 2000) and La Sapienza in Rome (since 2006), contributing to the training of students and specialists in clinical and cardiological medicine at international level.
For more than twenty years he served as a Member of the Parliament of the Canton of Ticino, actively participating in the work of the health commissions, with a particular commitment to improving the hospital system and healthcare training.
He was rapporteur of the new Health Law of the Canton of Ticino, contributing directly to the regulatory and structural reform of the hospital organisation and of regional health services.
He has taken part as Principal Investigator in more than 130 international clinical studies, operating according to GCP (Good Clinical Practice) standards for medical research on new cardiovascular treatments.
He is a member of the Board of the Fondazione Cardiocentro Ticino, actively participating in the strategic and scientific direction of the institution since its conception.
During his second parliamentary term he continued to sit on the cantonal Health Commission, serving as its president between 1996 and 1997 and guiding the development of innovative healthcare guidelines.
He held the position of Medical Director and Head of Cardiology of the Cardiocentro Ticino. Under his direction the institute became a national centre of excellence for the treatment of cardiovascular disease, with a particular focus on technological innovation, interventional cardiology and cardiac surgery.
He was rapporteur for the updating of the articles of the cantonal Health Law, continuing his regulatory commitment in favour of public medicine.
He is an active member of the Fondazione Ticino Cuore, whose goal is to improve the prevention and early treatment of cardiac arrest and cardiovascular emergencies in Ticino.
He sits on the editorial board of the medical-scientific journal “Kardiovaskuläre Medizin”, contributing to the evaluation and dissemination of high-quality cardiovascular content.
He was appointed Professor Emeritus at the University of Zurich and continues to teach as a part-time Professor at the University of Insubria in the Faculty of Cardiology.
He chairs the Board of the SHK Stiftung für Herz- und Kreislaufkrankheiten, a Swiss foundation dedicated to research into and prevention of cardiovascular disease.
He is a member of the Board of Directors of MTA Medical Trials Analysis Swiss SA, a company dedicated to the management of clinical studies and statistical analysis in the medical field.
He is part of the Zurich Heart House – Foundation for Cardiovascular Research, which promotes excellence in cardiological research and training.
He received the prestigious “Andreas Grüntzig Preis” from the Swiss Society of Cardiology for his pioneering contributions to interventional cardiology and academic medicine in Switzerland.
He completed his most recent official GCP refresher course, confirming his continuing commitment to the quality of cardiovascular clinical research.
After leaving the direction of the Cardiocentro, he practises privately at the Centro Cardiologico Ticino, Via Pretorio 9 in Lugano, offering specialist consultations in clinical cardiology.
